Managing release of assessment tasks

A useful feature of the quiz and assignment tools in MyLO is the ability to selectively release assessment tasks. Criteria that can be used for the release of quizzes are:

  • A specific group of students
  • A specific date and time for release
  • A specific date and time for closure
  • A numerical value from the student database (e.g. release quiz 2 only after quiz 1 has been passed)
  • A password that users must enter
  • An IP address - i.e. students can only access the quiz from a specific location (such as an onsite lab).

For online assignments, release and closure can be set to specific dates and times.

For designers this feature presents opportunities to:

  • provide a structured assessment pathway
  • ensure that students have completed essential work before undertaking more complex tasks
  • reduce the risk of overwhelming students by releasing assessment work in stages.

Links to learning modules and links to pages can also be released selectively and can be linked to quiz results. So, for example, module 2 may only be released once the quiz for module 1 has been passed.

It is recommended that quizzes and assignments are released and closed at times when you (or other staff) will be available to assist students. For example, closing a quiz at 12 midnight on a Sunday could mean that students taking the quiz "at the last minute" could run into problems and have no support available.
