Preparing an online course

Setting online quizzes, self tests and surveys

One of the more attractive features of online teaching is the use of online quizzes. Letting MyLO do all the hard work of grading and managing results is quite a revelation - especially for large classes. The quiz and self-test tools in MyLO can also be used for non-assessed work, which can be very useful as a learning tool.

Students tend to appreciate the instant feedback they receive, and the flexibility of being able to take a quiz or self-test when/where they need to. As a designer you have considerable control over how students use online quizzes, how they interact with them, and how they receive feedback and results.

MyLO offers three types of 'assessments' :

Quizzes - online tests with grades recorded in the MyLO Grade Book. The results can contribute to the overall assessment for the subject. Automatically graded questions are a feature.

Self-tests (non-assessable) - online tests with informal grades, and feedback for students to monitor their progress. Commonly, they are automatically graded.

Surveys - anonymous ungraded online tests; ideal for evaluating your subject or canvassing students' opinions on an issue.

Hints and tips:

  • The quiz/survey interface in MyLO has many options and takes a little getting used to. Prior training or assistance from an experienced technologist is recommended when you first start using these tools.
  • A software tool called Respondus can make the development of MyLO quizzes somewhat easier, and you don't need to be online as you write/edit them. UTAS has a license for Respondus. IT support staff can download it from the university download site and install it for you. Further information and support for the software can be obtained from the Respondus website. Also see the links to guides for Respondus below.
  • Assessable quizzes should be thoroughly tested before they are released to students.
  • It is a good idea to have a sample quiz (which is not assessed) available for students to try - before they start using the assessable quizzes.
